Tenancy Deposit Scheme
The Independent Housing Ombudsman has introduced a two-year pilot scheme in designated areas of the country.
In the private sector many tenants give their landlord a deposit against possible non-payment of rent or damage to property. When a tenancy comes to an end, if there is a disagreement about the return of the deposit, both the landlord and tenant suffer much hardship and inconvenience.
If the landlord, or the agent acting on their behalf, is a member of the Tenancy Deposit Scheme such disputes will be settled quickly and fairly.
Under the scheme
Deposits are protected during the tenancy.
Where there is no dispute at the end of a tenancy, the deposit will be returned promptly.
Where there is a dispute it will be dealt with fairly by the Independent Housing Ombudsman.
The Ombudsman will make his decision within 10 working days of receiving the necessary information.
If his decision is wholly or partly in favour of the tenant, they will receive the money within a further 5 working days
